The couple have been travelling for the best part of a year now, keen to catch up on all the holidays that they never took while he was working. Their trip, however, is not a conventional holiday at all. The Eckhardts are currently in Lyon, France, and are planning to stay there for at least a month. "We love travelling through France, but our intention to stay here has another motive. We have now joined up for French lessons, which keep us busy during the day and leave us with enough time to explore the nearby regions", explains Sheila. The Eckhardts are not on their own - there are more young-at-heart students who are making good use of their post-retirement leisure time to learn new skills.
Administrators of language schools in France say that they receive a lot of enquiries about language courses from people above the age of 50. "There were many enquiries from the United States of America. We are currently being approached by older couples who are travelling through France and keen to learn French while on an extended holiday here. It was the increased number of enquiries from people within this age group that prompted us to think of starting a course exclusively for them", explains Adrienne Depardieu, a French teacher. Language school staff say that, previously, there were only usually one or two students in each batch of 25 who were far older than the average student. As these numbers began to increase, many language schools decided to create a special language course with their specific interests in mind. This means that French language lessons could be taken in combination with a wine-tasting holiday or with special importance placed on learning about cuisine or culture.
For younger students wanting to take French courses France has, for a long time, offered a variety of options. The new tailor-made courses for students over 50 cater for those who have the time and desire to explore France using newly acquired language skills. For many older students wishing to learn the French language France-based courses of this kind offer a chance to return to school and relive the joys of learning.

The second day allowed the teachers to visit and inspect a range of available accommodations for their groups before spending a relaxed afternoon at the stunning Blue Lagoon Spa before departing for their return journey back to the UK.
The successful trip took place on May 31st 2010 and the first field trip groups are planned for May 2011.

The second day allowed the teachers to visit and inspect a range of available accommodations for their groups before spending a relaxed afternoon at the stunning Blue Lagoon Spa before departing for their return journey back to the UK.
The successful trip took place on May 31st 2010 and the first field trip groups are planned for May 2011.
