Kitesurfing Going Beyond The Basics

You've launched your kite, got comfortable on your board and even got the timing for a proper heel-jibe turn sussed out.

United Kingdom (ePressReleases.org) July 22, 2010 - Now, you wonder, what's next? Kitesurfing may be a relatively new sport, but it has enough depth and variety to keep your feet glued to the board and your hands strapped to the handle for a long time. Once you've mastered the basic skills of handling your kite, your body and your board, it's time to get involved with the more interesting aspects of this fantastic sport.

Advanced kitesurfing is all about the various interactions between the three main elements of the sport: your body, the board and the kite (as well as the wind). Once you have mastered each of these areas separately, it's time to take your skills to the next level by exploring how each element combines with the others and by learning new techniques that will open the way to new tricks and stunts or simply a greater sense of freedom.

Incredible jumps!

Controlled flying is the 'face' of kitesurfing, and with good reason. On the one hand, it's one of the most spectacular things you can do on your board, which never fails to impress the crowds. On the other hand, it's also a fantastic thrill - one that gives you that adrenaline rush 'type-T' personalities always seem to crave.

While it is no more magical than a big jump followed by a gliding descent, controlled flying requires a level of technical expertise that makes the whole thing look like some sort of sorcery. Soaring over the waves, you have to build up tension on both kite and board before making your jump, which is accomplished by increasing your acceleration and maintaining momentum. Once you've built up the tension, you surf into the wave, riding it to its crest, when you use all the power stored up to explode into your jump. As you go into the air, the kite needs to be snapped overhead and then turned into the wind to glide down again. As it's plain to see, jumps require knowledge in several areas and a good deal of practice - beginners should only approach them with the help of an instructor.

Kitesurfing workshop with James Boulding

Practice makes perfect, but there is nothing like the advice of a true professional to take your skills to the next level. James Boulding is one of the top 20 kitesurfers in the world - the kind that gets free helicopter flights to exotic locations to shoot surfing videos - and Exelement has invited him to give the first of a new series of kitesurfing workshops. This class is tailored to those riders who have mastered the basics and are looking to take their surfing to the next level with the help of a seasoned pro. Come to Rye on 25th July and enjoy a kitesurfing course that will change the way you surf.
