HOW TO SCORE YOUR GOALS DURING WORLD CUP 2010
Football fan or football-phobe: it's possible to strengthen your relationship
United Kingdom (ePressReleases.org) June 23, 2010 - You might be the most compatible couple ever, but every four years, in the frenzy of World Cup football fever, it may seem that you and your partner are worlds apart when it comes to levels of appreciation for 'the beautiful game'.
With a month of World Cup madness upon us, it might not be the best moment to try and put that special spark back into your relationship, but the onset of 'football widowhood' needn't be a cause for anxiety.
According to eHarmony.co.uk relationship expert and Director of Research and Development at eHarmony Labs Dr Gian Gonzaga, there is no need to feel emotionally and physically abandoned when your partner decides to spend more time in front of the television watching the World Cup.
"Everyone has a hobby, and the important thing is to not let that hobby come between you as a couple," says Dr Gonzaga. "There are ways to minimise the feeling of being emotionally abandoned and use this time to actually strengthen your relationship".
Furthermore, it's important to show a little bit of interest in your partner's hobby. Simply asking your partner about the highs and lows of the game gives them the opportunity to discuss something they are passionate about and shows that you appreciate their interests.
"While it is important for people to share similar interests, there will be times when a partner will have an interest or hobby that isn't necessarily one you enjoy," adds Dr Gonzaga. "But it doesn't have to drive a wedge between you and could even help you become closer. By allowing your partner to enjoy a hobby, you show you understand their interests. And if you decide to have a party around the events, it shows you are at least trying to get involved. If you're not a fan of the sport now, you might just become one".
Who knows, the World Cup could be bearable - or even fun! Work out an alternating system of hosting match days with your friends and their partners to save on pub bills and babysitting costs. If you're a new couple that has just recently started dating, this provides an opportunity to get to know your partner's friends and their significant others. If your partner is out of the house, then profit from your time alone to do something that you've always meant to do, but never got around to.
